Apple recently provided us the ability to "federate" or "claim" all Apple IDs that use either the @uscsd.k12.pa.us and @uscstudents.org domain names.  This means that only the Upper St. Clair School District can create Apple IDs with these domains.  The new Federated Apple IDs will allow us some additional management, but also provide added benefits to our users like additional free iCloud space and single sign-on capabilities.

 

The move to Federated Apple ID may require some interaction from you.  There are answers some common questions and as well as instructions on moving to a Federated Apple ID below.

 

Why are we moving to Federated Apple IDs?

The new Federated Apple IDs will allow us some additional management like automatic Apple ID creation, but also provide added benefits to our users like additional free iCloud space for easy iPad backups and photo storage as well as allowing users to use your email address and network password (not your email password) as your new Apple ID credentials.  After you complete the process below, the next day, you will be able to log in with your new Federated Apple ID and receive these benefits.  You can check out this knowledge base article on how to log in with your new Federated Apple ID.

 

What happens to all the Apps and Books that were purchased in my old @uscsd.k12.pa.us or @uscstudents.org Apple ID?

You do not lose anything that was purchased with funds.  They will all be moved to the new Apple ID that you must create as part of the Federated Apple ID process. 
 

I received an email from Apple <[email protected]> with the subject "Update Apple ID" that said I need to update my Apple ID.  Is this a phishing scam?

 

No.  This is a legitimate email from Apple that you received if you created an Apple ID with the @uscsd.k12.pa.us or @uscstudents.org domain.  It looks like the picture below.

 

 

What do I need to do?

 

In short, you must change the email address on your @uscsd.k12.pa.us or @uscstudents.org Apple ID to a different email address because the Upper St. Clair School District is "claiming" the domains that end in @uscsd.k12.pa.us and @uscstudents.org so the District has control over who uses them.  If you do not change your @uscsd.k12.pa.us or @uscstudents.org email address associated with this Apple ID, by September 21, 2019, Apple will move your @uscsd.k12.pa.us or @uscstudents.org to a temporary account, and you must claim the Apple ID. You must change your Apple ID to use any email address that is not currently associated with another Apple ID and does not end in @uscsd.k12.pa.us or @uscstudents.org.

Changing your email address only changes the Apple ID that other people see when sharing with you, and the email address Apple uses to contact you regarding your account. The organization reclaiming your email address won't have access to your data, and your data remains with your Apple ID whether or not you change the email address associated with your account. 

This data includes content you might store in iCloud, like photos, videos, and documents, as well as any App Store, iTunes Store, and Apple Books purchases, or Apple Music subscription. Sign in with your updated Apple ID email address to continue using iCloud, the App Store, iTunes Store, Apple Books, Apple Pay, iMessage, FaceTime, Find My iPhone, and more. 

 

Before you start the process below, sign out of your current @uscsd.k12.pa.us or @uscstudents.org address on any device that is using that Apple ID.

 

If you do not remember your password for your @uscsd.k12.pa.us Apple ID, go to iforgot.apple.com to reset your password.

How do I change my email address?

 

Again, Apple has a great knowledge base article on how to change your email address to something other than you @uscsd.k12.pa.us or @uscstudents.org address.  The steps are outlined below:

 

1. Go to appleid.apple.com and sign in with your @uscsd.k12.pa.us or @uscstudents.org Apple ID.  If you do not remember your password, you can visit iforgot.apple.com to reset your password.
2. In the Account section, click Edit.

3. Under your Apple ID, click Change Apple ID.

4. Enter the new email that you want to use for your Apple ID.

 

​

5. Click Continue. 

 

6.  After you enter the email address that you want to use as your Apple ID, a verification code is sent to you at that address. Enter the verification code from the email into the fields provided and start using your updated Apple ID.

 

Please note you will not be able to sign in to a Federated Apple ID until any conflicts with existing Apple IDs are resolved by following the directions in this article.
