There are two ways to create Kami Assignments:
A. Share the Kami Assignment Link in Canvas
B. Use the Kami Canvas External Tool
- Assessment Mode
- Assignment Mode
This article describes using the Kami Canvas External Tool - Assessment Mode.
In this mode, once work is submitted, you're the only one with access until you return the graded files. Students are NOT able to make changes to the submitted document.
Assessment mode provides access to features that are not available in assignment mode. These include the ability to enable the due date feature with a countdown timer, modify the due date and time of your assignments even before they are due, receive all student submissions automatically when the due date arrives, and gain full access to files once the students have submitted their work.
1. In Canvas, click "+ Assignment”
2. Choose Submission Type
In the “Submission Type” box, choose 'External Tool' from the drop down menu. Click the “Find” button.
3. Choose “Kami Assignment”
This will take you to the Kami Assignment window.
4. Choose your File Location
Choose which location to pick your file from to use for your assignment (Kami will convert files, so images, office documents, and PDFs are all OK).
5. Select your Document
Click on the document you want then click “Select” in the bottom left corner.
6. Choose Assessment Mode
Assignment mode is the default selection. To switch from assignment mode, you must actively choose "Assessment Mode." Choose “Enable Real-time Monitoring” if you would like to monitor student progress on the assignment. (See image below for a description of real-time monitoring.)
Choose "Control Features" to select the specific features you want to grant students access to for the assignment. Click “Continue”
The “Due Date” option becomes active when assessment mode is selected. The due date feature allows teachers to set a specific time and date to end the assessment. When you enable the due date, a countdown timer will appear on your student's menu bar. Kami will automatically return all unsubmitted work to the teacher when the time's up. NOTE: Due to Kami's automatic submission process, late assignments are not a viable option in this mode.
7. Click "Select" to complete the process in Canvas
You will be taken back to the following window again and need to click "Select" to complete the set up process in Canvas.
If the due date is reached and the student hasn’t yet clicked Submit, Kami will automatically submit their work on their behalf. Students will see a dialog message saying that their work has been submitted for them.
Students instantly lose access to view or edit their work once submitted, so they'll be redirected to the Kami Dashboard. They'll only regain access once the teacher has returned it to them
8. Editing the due date for Kami Canvas assignments:
- In Canvas, go to assignments in your course.
- Click the assignment you wish to edit the due date for.
- Select Menu in the Kami window.
- Select Canvas settings.
- Change the assignment deadline.
9. Returning Assessments Back to Students
After grading in Kami, click the Return button or Return All button. Here's the difference:
Return All – choose this option if you want to return work to all students whose work was submitted. Kami will let you know how many students completed their work and how many were incomplete. This option may have a few seconds delay depending on the class size.
Return – choose this option if you want to return the specific assessment or assignment you have open in Kami. This option automatically returns the work back to the student.
10. If you are using Real-Time Monitoring
Real-time monitoring allows you to assess your students' progress with their assignments or offer additional feedback and assistance to help them stay on track.
This option is only available when using the Kami external tool in Canvas to set up either an assignment or assessment.
Once students have accessed the assignment on their devices, you can open the file in Canvas SpeedGrader and utilize Kami tools to annotate the student's document or observe their real-time annotations.
Please be aware that this action will mark the assignment as "submitted" in the Canvas GradeBook. To make the file accessible in Speed Grader, Kami must trigger a submission when the file is initially opened. If this approach disrupts your workflow, the files can still be monitored in real-time through Google Drive.
11. Monitoring Files Through Google Drive
A. Click the relevant assignment folder. Locate the student’s work that you wish to review. Right-click on the file and select “Open with” and then “Annotate with Kami.”
B. Click the relevant assignment folder. Locate the student’s work that you wish to review. Right-click on the file and select “Open with” and then “Annotate with Kami.”
Once the file is opened, you can start adding your own annotations to provide feedback or intervention for your students. Any annotations you create on the file will be automatically shared back to the students' copy, so you can use this to collaborate with them in real-time. If you are unable to locate a student’s work in the assignment folder, it likely means either they haven’t opened the file yet, or have deleted the file by mistake.
If you do not see the "open with Kami" option, you may need to click on "Connect more apps" at the bottom of that "Open with" Menu and add Kami as a connected app.
