During AP testing for languages, the DAC app or the ETS-APCJ app on a District Chromebook may require a device readiness check (that involves checking for a headset being plugged in) be completed. It is important that this check is successful and that the Chromebook successfully recognizes that a headset is plugged in and is routing audio through it.
To ensure that this check is successful, be sure to plug the headset into the Chromebook prior to starting the audio check.
The following screen captures document the ETS-APCJ testing app process.
It is recommended to have the headset plugged in while on the below screen, prior to clicking "Run".
This screen will appear upon clicking "Run". If needed, you can still plug the headset in on this screen, prior to clicking "Continue".
This screen will appear upon clicking "Continue". If the microphone is listed as "Built-In Mic" and the Headset/Speakers is listened as "Speaker", then the Chromebook did not recognize that the headset was plugged in. Click "Cancel". Try to plug the headset into a different USB port on the Chromebook - if possible - and then click "Run Again", following the steps above.
This is what should appear if the Chromebook correctly recognizes that a headset is plugged in:
(Note: The device listed will vary based on its brand and model, but it should NOT be the built-in audio devices.)
If after switching USB ports on the Chromebook the headset is still not recognized, exit the application by clicking the red "X" in the top right corner and confirming you want to exit by clicking "Ok" on the "Shutdown Workstation" dialog box that appears. Keep the headset plugged in.
When back on the main Chromebook login screen, click on the time in the bottom right corner of the screen to open the menu, then click on the ">" to the right of the sound icon, as circled below:
Then, click on the headset's input and output devices to set them.
Next, open the testing app again and run the audio check once more. The correct audio devices should now be recognized and selected and you can proceed. It is also recommended to keep the same headset plugged into the Chromebook until the test is completed by the student(s). This will ensure that these settings are retained and that this process does not need to be repeated.
